Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviours or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention.
Medicinal cannabis is used to treat many aspects of ASD, ranging from exacerbations of behavioural disturbance and anxiety to improved interactions with perceived stressors.
Cannabinoid Receptors
Cannabinoid receptors are located throughout the body, particularly in the brain regions involved in emotion, behaviour, sensory processing, and sleep regulation - areas often affected in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The endocannabinoid system (ECS), which includes these receptors, plays a key role in maintaining balance in these functions.
In ASD, activation of cannabinoid receptors may help reduce neuroinflammation, ease anxiety, improve sleep, and support emotional regulation. Medicinal cannabis offers a controlled way to deliver CBD and THC, allowing for symptom relief without the unwanted cognitive or perceptual side effects often associated with recreational cannabis use.
Used under medical supervision, medicinal cannabis is an increasingly considered option in Australia for individuals with ASD who experience treatment-resistant symptoms or complex behavioural challenges.
